whoever said money cant buy you everything obviously hasnt been to indonesia: part 2, solo/jogja food
took an internal garuda flight to solo (with desk clerks playing bejeweled and zuma. i wonder how many man-hours of productivity popcap has gobbled) and landed in the tiny airport, which is even more budget than jakarta. at least the jakarta airport had a looped luggage belt (even though you could see a hand periodically emerge from the rubber curtain to push baggage through). solo had a "luggage belt" that ended halfheartedly in a big bin after about 5 metres of metal rolling tubes. hahaha. their eccentricities are forgiven though, because the food in solo was consistently the best i've ever eaten.

this is why you don't see pigeons in indonesia. yes, those are pigeon heads. say hello, pigeons! you probably cant see this in the picture, but one of the skulls (in foreground) is cracked. i ate the brain, which really is creamy, and also very cool to eat-- braaaains! (said in a zombie voice)

i have no idea what this is called (nasi leweh? eh? dunno) but it was (like almost everything else) extremely, extremely good. the trifecta of lemongrass, chilli padi and coconut milk is powerful stuff indeed.

two guys playing guitar at a tiny gudeg stall by the road. played fastball's don't give up on me until we gave them some money, then they ended the verse and left. by the way gudeg is jogjakarta's specialty; some sort of insanely-spicy preserved veg thing with creamy yummy chicken and rice.

best durians ever. even after an entire day of stuffing myself with food (madam suharti's fried chicken! i am in love with that place. tried to take a picture of the huge billboard outside but nearly got run over by a bus.) i polished off 2 or 3 seeds. they are sweet, creamy, and (believe it or not!) totally un-smelly. shocking!
what you see here is probably only one-tenth of what i ate in solo. the food was just so good, and i ate so frequently, that i often forgot to take photos altogether. oh well. among the most-excellent things i didn't take pictures of: soto ayam, tempeh, keropok, tofu, fried chicken, bakso, gado-gado, sate, goreng pisang, quail omelettes, tofu soup... you get the idea.
part 3 will be dedicated solely to borobodur, prambanan and whatever-isn't-food. just realised how piggish i look-- most of my photos so far are of food. heh heh
